What is National Sunglasses Day?

Spearheaded by The Vision Council, National Sunglasses Day is a day of awareness, education, and celebration in the eyewear and vision sector. Celebrated each year on June 27th, National Sunglasses Day has become an online celebration through the hashtag #SunglassSelfie and an abundance of educational events, campaigns, and fundraisers designed to raise awareness about the importance of eye protection.

According to The Vision Council, every day millions of Americans make the conscious decision not to wear sunglasses or ultraviolet-protective eyewear. This may seem like a harmless decision, but there are EXTREME vision risks associated with this lack of eye protection, especially for people who actively choose not to wear sunglasses during the hottest and brightest parts of the year. Over time, harmful UV radiation (the culprit for sunburns and skin cancer) can inflict serious damage on our vision. That's why sunglasses are so important: not just as a fashion statement, but as a first line of defense between our eyes and that pesky, pesky sun that gives us so many wonderful days while also literally trying to kill us. 

(We're being dramatic there -- we're Californians and flip out when the temperature drops below 65, but we're also Californians who wear sunglasses Every. Single. Day.) 

Even on cloudy or snowy days when the sun doesn't ~look~ as bright, it's still firing its UV lasers at your retinas. That's why sunglasses and safety glasses are so darn critical, and why we'll never shut up about how much we love them. National Sunglasses Day serves to remind people that sunglasses aren't just an accessory -- they're a major health necessity, no matter the weather.   

Why do we celebrate National Sunglasses Day?

We mean, come on, our sunglasses are basically our babies here. You get that, right? But in all seriousness, National Sunglasses Day is more than just a chance to stock up on discount sunnies. In the health and wellness sphere, it's a day to spread awareness and education on common vision issues and the importance of protecting your eyes. For the Bomber team, it's also a MASSIVE party, because it's one of the only times of the year we get the whole team together to celebrate. 

June 27th is our chance each year to look back on what we've done in the previous year, celebrate our successes as a company, and figure out what we're doing next. Smack dab in the middle of the year, it's a perfect opportunity for us to take stock of where we came from and what we're doing next.
